Ski Day Trip and Ski Guide Training Events 01/21 and 01/22 Are Canceled!
It is with sadness and frustration that we announce that our Ski Day Trip and Ski Guide Training events this weekend are cancelled due to weather. The Truckee/Tahoe area is now under a continuous “Winter Storm Warning” until Monday, January 23rd. Some of our drivers bringing skiers up from the bay area and Sacramento Valley do not have 4 wheel drive and are hesitant to drive others when chain requirements are on. We also have several very young first or second time visually impaired (VIP) skiers signed up. Skiing in a snow storm would not be a good experience for them. On-the-Snow Guide training would be difficult in the cold heavy storm that is now predicted for Sunday. It would be very difficult to teach someone how to guide a skier in tracks when there are no tracks! We have another Saturday Day Trip scheduled for Saturday, February 4th. We will make every attempt to to reschedule our Classroom and On-the-Snow Guide Training on Saturday February 4th and Sunday, February 5th. Stay tuned!

Fabulous Day Trip on February 6th!

Fourteen VIP Skiers and their guides enjoyed a fabulous day on the snow! Due to lack of snow the past couple of years, this was our first day trip in three years. Seeing the happy faces and hearing the squeals of delight reminded those of us who volunteer for Ski for Light why we do what we do. Joy was freely expressed by Annalisa one of our new skiers, “It was one of the top five experiences I ever had!…. The best and most magical part of my day was when I was able to go down a big hill!…. I was free, free as my sighted friends!” It doesn’t get much better then this!
Our First Guide Training in Three Years a Success!
- One of our groups of trainers and trainees set out for the day.
- Carol prepares to guide Riley down the hill blindfolded.
- Cindy trains a new guide while the rest of the group pays close attention.
On Sunday, January 24th we trained a fantastic group of 9 new guides! Due to lack of snow, this was our first guide training in 3 years.

The SRSFL third annual summer/fall hiking weekend took place from August
7-10, 2015. In all, ten visually impaired participants, 12 guides and
volunteers and three guide dogs enjoyed the beauty and serenity of Lake
Tahoe and the lovely but very dry Sierra Nevada Mountains.
This year, we welcomed three fabulous new guides, and a couple of visually
impaired folks we haven’t seen in a while. Most participants stayed at the
Lakeview Lodge at the Zephyr Point Presbyterian Conference Center, and we
all agreed that it was truly magical and easier having the entire building
to ourselves. SRSFL guide, Jim Mrazek generously offered tours of the lake
in his 44-foot motorboat; many of the visually impaired folks had a great
time driving it. Some hiked out of Carson Pass up to and beyond Lake
Winnemucca; others explored trails around the Spooner Lake area; while
others swam in the lake and enjoyed some relaxing time at the lodge. One
major highlight was having our own private chef, thanks to Pam Bittner. The
menu included good hardy breakfasts, lasagna, various burgers and a
seemingly endless supply of cookies. Everyone pitched in to help, and we are
all extremely grateful that she has offered to do it again next year. Great
weather, great camaraderie, welcoming and challenging mountains, great food
and amazingly generous guides and volunteers — all the right ingredients
for a magical SRSFL weekend.
